Prep Your Home for Winter

November has arrived and our 90-degree heat streak has finally subsided. Where are our cool weather lovers? We know you’re out there, even if you’re few and far between since we do actually live in the deep south. I’m one of those who loves the cold months! It’s the time to layer up, grab a beanie, sip on a strong cup of joe, and hang by the fireplace. But, in order to get to the relaxing point, we need to work hard, then play hard, yes? It’s important to prepare your home for the colder months, yes, even in Alabama.

Save Energy & Let the Light In
Fall is a great time to seal drafty doors and windows which can suck energy out. Check around your home and replace worn weather stripping and caulking. If you use your fireplace for heat, be sure to have the chimney cleaned and checked for safety. Open the curtains and blinds to let sunlight in during the day – likewise, close them at night.

Move Furniture Away from Vents
If you asked my husband how often I rearrange furniture he’d tell you “too often”. Ha! What can I say, I like to shake things up sometimes – especially when it means making room for the Christmas tree! Anyway, you may have unknowingly placed furniture in front of vents when you’ve moved or rearranged. Check around the house and ensure that vents aren’t blocked. This helps to make sure every room is getting its maximum heat potential.

Use the Oven
Baking, and broiling things will keep your house warmer, especially in rooms nearest the kitchen. Don’t be afraid to roast a chicken or bake a ton of casseroles when the temperatures dip! Hey, in my family, we’re game any excuse to eat around the holidays.

Take it Outside
Before this Alabama chill turns frigid, get outside and winterize the exterior of your home. Check gutters for clogged leaves and other debris. Go ahead and examine the roof and siding for any repairs which could create drafts or leaks in the cold. If the gardening season is over, drain water from outdoor faucets and garden hoses. Ensure the sprinkler system is off and reinforce any exposed pipes which could burst with the cold.

It’s my favorite time of year – the beautiful colors, the crisp air, and the smell of holiday recipes will be coming soon! Take care of the prep work now and then take time to slow down and enjoy this season.
